PRO NFL hall of fame PRO NFL Football hall of fame PRO NFL Football hall of fame

Established in 1963 by National Football League to commemorate the sport's professional origins. Address: 2121 George Halas Drive NW, Canton, OH 44708.

The hall originally consisted of two buildings. A third was added in 1971, a fourth in 1978. In its 51,000 square feet of space, the hall of fame includes an area tracing the history of pro football, an art gallery, a room devoted to enshrinees and their teams, and many special exhibits.

The hall of fame library contains many original documents, press clippings, books and magazines.

Eligibility: Nominated players must be retired five years, coaches must be retired, and contributors can still be active. Voting done by 39-member panel made up of media representatives from all 31 NFL cities (two from New York), one PFWA representative and six selectors-at-large.

Induction takes place during Hall of Fame weekend, in late July or early August, which includes an NFL exhibition game at Canton's Fawcett Field.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame's charter class of 17 members was inducted on September 7, 1963. With the election of the Class of 2003, there are now 221 members in the Hall of Fame.
